A Local Guide to Planning a Wedding Weekend in Glossop

Your wedding is one of the most special occasions of your life, so why limit the celebrations to one day?

When friends and family are travelling to join your wedding, turning the occasion into a full weekend gives you more time together and creates lots of memories beyond the ceremony itself. From a relaxed catch-up the night before to coffee, food and a walk the following morning, those extra moments can become some of the loveliest parts of the whole experience.

And if you’re getting married at The Old Town Hall, you have Glossop right on your doorstep.

Sitting at the north-western gateway to the Peak District, Glossop brings together historic streets, independent businesses, great food and easy access to some spectacular countryside.

Here’s our local guide to making the most of it.

Start the celebrations before the wedding

The night before your wedding doesn't need to involve an elaborate itinerary.

In fact, after months of planning, something relaxed might be exactly what everyone needs.

If guests are arriving in Glossop on the Friday ahead of a Saturday wedding, encourage them to settle in and explore the town at their own pace. Glossop has a thriving selection of independent shops, cafés, pubs and places to eat, making it easy for people to find somewhere for a drink or dinner.

You could also arrange an informal gathering for guests who are already in town. And, rather than treating this as another event that needs to be meticulously planned, think of it as a chance for the people closest to you to meet, catch up and get excited for the day ahead.

Keep things easy, just a few drinks, good food and an early enough finish that everyone is ready for the big day.

Make Glossop part of your wedding experience

One of the things we love about The Old Town Hall is that it doesn't sit separately from the place around it.

We’re right in the heart of Glossop, positioned above Glossop Market Hall and overlooking Market Square. When you celebrate here, the town becomes part of the experience.

Glossop itself has a rich history. The wider town grew significantly through the cotton industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, and you can still see evidence of its Victorian past throughout the centre today. Head towards Old Glossop and the story goes back even further, with stone cottages and a medieval market cross reflecting its much older roots.

This sense of history and character makes exploring the town a lovely addition to a wedding weekend. Your guests could browse the independent shops, stop for coffee or have a wander around before getting ready for the main event.

This way, the weekend feels less like simply travelling to a venue and more like arriving somewhere.

Spend your wedding day at The Old Town Hall

Then, of course, comes the reason everyone is here.

The Old Town Hall has stood at the heart of Glossop since the 1830s, and today its historic surroundings have been carefully restored for a new generation of celebrations.

High ceilings, expansive Victorian windows and lots of natural light give the room a sense of occasion, while the fresh, neutral interior leaves space for couples to bring their own style and personality.

You can host your civil ceremony here before moving seamlessly onto the rest of your celebration, keeping your guests together rather than asking everyone to travel between different venues.

Tables, chairs and crisp white linen provide the foundations. And our private fully stocked bar is ready for the celebrations.

Being directly above Glossop Market Hall gives weddings here another local connection. Catering can be provided through the food vendors within the Market Hall, bringing the spirit and flavour of downstairs into your wedding upstairs.

From saying “I do” to raising the first glass and eventually heading for the dancefloor, the whole day can unfold in the heart of Glossop.

Give your guests time to explore

Not every minute of a wedding weekend needs to be organised.

If guests are staying for a couple of nights, giving them a few recommendations means they can discover Glossop in their own time without feeling as though they’re following another schedule.

A wander through Old Glossop is a lovely way to see another side of the town. Its historic streets and stone buildings feel a world away from the bustle of the centre, despite being close by.

For something green without venturing far, Manor Park sits on the eastern side of Glossop town centre beside the Old Glossop Conservation Area. Its landscaped grounds include a lake, woodland paths and gardens, making it an easy option for guests who fancy some fresh air.

Or people may prefer to stay around the town centre, browse the shops and find somewhere for a coffee. After all, not everybody wants to climb a hill the morning of a wedding!

Make the most of the Peak District

For guests who do want to pull on their walking boots, Glossop makes an excellent starting point.

The town sits at the foot of Snake Pass and is known as the north-western gateway to the Peak District. Black Hill, Bleaklow, Kinder Scout and the Longdendale Valley are among the walking areas accessible from this part of the Peaks.

So, there are plenty of possibilities if you want to extend your wedding weekend into the surrounding countryside.

A local walk could be the perfect activity for the day before the wedding, or something for guests to enjoy before travelling home on Sunday. There’s even a route beginning in Glossop town centre that passes through Old Glossop and heads towards Swineshaw Reservoir before returning through Manor Park.

You don't necessarily need to organise a group expedition either. Simply sharing a few local suggestions with your guests gives them the option to explore if they have time.

For anyone travelling from further afield, it’s a great excuse to turn your wedding into a proper weekend away.

Think about where everyone will stay

If you have guests travelling to Glossop, accommodation is worth considering early in your planning.

There are options in and around the town, as well as a much wider choice throughout the Peak District and Derbyshire, from hotels and B&Bs to self-catering properties and larger accommodation suitable for groups.

When you put together your recommendations, think about the different people attending. Some guests may want to stay as close to the centre of Glossop as possible, particularly if they’d rather not drive during the celebrations. Others might see your wedding as an opportunity for a countryside break and prefer somewhere further into the Peak District.

Providing a handful of options at different price points can make planning much easier for everyone.

It’s also worth encouraging guests to book sooner rather than later, particularly if your wedding falls during a busy weekend locally.

The morning after

The morning after a wedding deserves its own little moment. Everyone is usually full of stories from the night before, photographs are already appearing in group chats and somebody is trying to piece together exactly how the final hour on the dancefloor unfolded. It’s the perfect opportunity for one last get-together.

You could arrange an informal breakfast or just let guests know where you’ll be if they fancy joining you for coffee. With cafés and places to eat around Glossop, there are plenty of opportunities to refuel before everyone heads home.

And, if you aren't quite ready for the weekend to end, take a walk afterwards. Manor Park provides an easy option close to town, while those with a little more time can head further into the surrounding countryside.

There’s no need for the morning after to be another formal part of the wedding. Sometimes it’s simply a chance to sit down together, laugh about the night before and delay saying goodbye for another hour.

Turn your wedding into a weekend to remember

A wedding weekend gives you something a single day never quite can: time.

That’s time for your families to get to know each other, time to catch up with friends who’ve travelled from further away, time to explore, eat together and enjoy the place you’ve chosen for such an important celebration.

Glossop offers you lots of ways to fill that time without needing to plan every second.

There’s history to discover, independent businesses to explore and the landscapes of the Peak District waiting just beyond the town. At the centre of it all is The Old Town Hall, ready to become the setting for the most important part of the weekend.

Your wedding may be the main event, but the coffee the morning after, the walk through town and the drinks shared the night before all become part of the story too.

If you’re considering celebrating your wedding at The Old Town Hall, please don't hesitate to contact us. Our team would love to hear about your plans and help you begin creating a wedding weekend in the heart of Glossop.
